In terms of flavor profile, the answer depends on where the wines are from. As such, this answer is a simplification: merlot tends to be lighter and smoother, with softer tannins and more fruit in the mid-palate. Malbec tends to be dark and tannic, with spicier notes in the finish. Both are part of the traditional Bordeaux blend, although in recent years malbec has become known more as a south american varietal than as a french blending grape.
