The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee from Plumpjack’s Oakville ranch, where Nils Venge once made the famed Cabernet Sauvignons under the Villa Mt. Eden label. (The 1974s and 1978s are still going strong.) Floral notes intermixed with creme de cassis, white chocolate, plum, and licorice characteristics are followed by a wine with supple tannins, fabulous concentration, a multilayered mouthfeel, and a finish that lasts 40 seconds. This incredible Cabernet can be drunk now or cellared for 20-25 years.
Named after partners Gary Franscioni and Gary Pisoni, this 50 acre vineyard was planted in 1995 along the terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range, overlooking the Salinas River Valley. Velvet smooth on the palate with rich, medium tannins, this Pinot offers flavors of ripe red fruit, subtle oak, nutmeg-clove-like spice. Winemaker Gary Brookman expects this bottling to drink beautifully over the next 7-10 years.
The South Mesa at Santa Barbara Highlands vineyard continues to be a great site for high altitude Syrah. 2007 was a light vintage and the wine is even more concentrated because of it.
Exhibiting a deep purple cherry hue, the wine's first notes are juniper and spice. The next notes are star anise, perfume, soy sauce, white flowers, rose petal, pepper, blackberry, and smoke. So concentrated you might even say reduced, the wine hints of green peppercorns, red wine braised shortribs, mushrooms, smoked bacon fat, and tar.
