We have 10 acres under contract at Oak Savanna Vineyard, all planted to Syrah. The vineyard lies at the enterance to our old estate on Foxen Canyon Road, so I am very familiar with the soil and microclimate of this great site. The wines from OSV turn out lush and ripe and ready for drinking soon after release.
McGinley vineyard, formerly known as the Westerly Vineyard, is located 2 miles north of Lake Cachuma in the Upper Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. The vineyard sits 37 miles east of the Pacific Ocean on a series of smooth, bench-like terraces that are broken by narrow, steep-sided drainageways. At 800 feet elevation this vineyard enjoys a southeastern exposure making it one of Santa Barbara County's warmest terroirs. In addition to a Paso Robles-like climate one is impressed with Westerly's rocky brown soils. Identified as "Positas fine sandy loam," this well-drained, cobbly soil is underlain by a reddish-brown gravelly clay at 20 to 26 inches. We currently have 3.5 acres of Syrah under contract here--0.5 acres of Clone 383, 1 acre of Clone 99 and 2 acres of Clone 7..
